Acupuncture for Back Pain:Just How Effective is Acupuncture for Back Pain Relief?Acupuncture can be very effective in the acute (early) stages of back pain where pain is at its most severe. So, will this treatment approach work for you? As you may already know I am a chartered Physiotherapist, Craniosacral therapist, Pilates instructor and long-term back pain therapist based in Cork. Why is this information relevant when it comes to acupuncture? I studied Acupuncture about ten years ago to include it in my practice. But, after some experimentation, decided not to use it in my clinical practice. Although I acknowledge a significant role for acupuncture in the treatment of back pain, I do not consider it as an effective sole treatment for the mechanical back pain that I see on a daily basis. I decided to stick with what I knew best and was getting results already! However, I would like to share with you how I think it can help with your back pain in my own experience. Acupuncture can be very effective in the acute (early) stages of back pain where pain is at its most severe. This is due to the effect it has on muscle spasm and the pain mechanism. I often refer this treatment to my clients at this stage to help to control the degree of their pain, and so allow them to move more easily at an early stage, which is the basis of my management approach to back pain.
However, it should be said that acupuncture appears to work best on nociceptive pain (pain coming from injury and peripheral disease),
more so than neuropathic pain (pain arising from within the nervous system).
Again, this highlights my point on the importance of early diagnosis in the management of your back pain.
If your therapist diagnoses you correctly from the outset, appropriate modalities of treatment can be chosen.
If it involves acute nociceptive pain then acupuncture may be of value.
As already stated, I see acupuncture as having a direct effect on acute pain in some patients.
If this is the case, the intake of medication to control pain can be reduced which I see as having a
positive effects
on the general health and function of the back pain patient.
It can also help to relax the nervous system which enhances sleep - a major requirement in the management of back pain. It is while we sleep that greatest healing occurs. To summarise, like all modalities - this treatment, used appropriately, can help in the pain management of some back pain and conditions. The above points are based on my own observations in my physiotherapy practice.
