Manage Back Pain

Back block, pilates and acupuncture

by Lesley
(Sydney)

I've had lower back pain on and off for many years. I used to get a lot of relief from osteopathy, but about 6 years ago, I found I was trying every osteopath and chiropractor in the area and still in pain. It was transferring to my feet and making it difficult to walk.

First, I got orthotics in my shoes. That helped a bit, but then I found a wonderful physiotherapist in Sydney called Sarah Key - author of The Back Sufferers Bible and other books.

She was the first to diagnose why I had back pain - a scoliosis of the spine, and cured my foot pain in one treatment - using massage with the feet.

She recommends use of a back block which I've been using ever since.

I also go to pilates which strengthens the core muscles and helps to support your back. That really helps to keep me pain free.

Acupuncture is like the band aid, the emergency treatment when all else fails and it is fantastic for pain relief.

With me, its also important to avoid getting too stressed as well. Tension causes a lot of discomfort and sets off the back pain. So I do relaxation and meditation to keep myself nice and relaxed.

All in all, its quite a lot of effort to keep pain free, but if you take ownership of your condition and work at being healthy it can be done.

I love this story!
by: Sally Ann Quirke

Well done you! I love this story!

I am very passionate about finding a management system for each individual person that gives them control of their pain. You found it!

Too often back pain sufferers end up dependent on 'therapists' to control their pain. However, as you have shown if you understand your back pain and its causes, you and your therapist can devise a daily programme that allows you to control it. At least most of the time!

I have a similar approach to the wonderful therapist you have worked with. I use postural correction with or without devices such as blocks, in conjunction with physiotherapy and the wonderful pilates! By the way I am a physio! Keep it going! Good Luck!
