Manage Back Pain

Back Pain Relief Product:

Which Products Really work?

So, which back pain relief product will help you most with your pain prevention, management and relief?

In this section, I'd like to talk about the type of products that I use to promote great a good posture - and so alleviate Back Pain in the longer term.

Although I rarely use relief products as the main form of back pain treatment in my physiotherapy practice - I often use "back friends", lumbar rolls, neck rolls, orthopaedic pillows and taping to assist in the management of back and neck pain with my clients.

I'd like to share with you both when and how they should be used - but I will start by talking about posture, as these Back Pain Relief Products are effectively posture-aids.

When you sit or stand in poor postural alignment for any length of time - you are placing a demand on your back that is often a main cause of back pain. When sitting you place the entire load and weight of your upper body onto your buttocks and thighs. If you have a good posture, this load is transferred appropriately, but when you don’t excess stress is placed on the bones, ligaments, discs and nerves - potentially causing injury and pain.

Standing posture:

Good standing posture means standing with your:
  • Hips and knees hip distance apart

  • Feet facing forwards.

  • Knees should be soft - not locked straight.

  • Place equal weight between your big toe, little toe and heal of foot, which means your body weight is balanced evenly through your feet, so that you are not overloading one part over another.

  • The pelvis should be in neutral - half way between and "Elvis thrust position" and sticking your bottom out behind you. This pelvic position will allow the curves of your back to be in neutral and the head to be where it should be.

  • The head is the heaviest part of the body and its correct positioning is of great importance in back pain care.

Sitting posture:
Correct sitting posture is a must in the management and prevention of back pain. How should you sit?
  • Legs hip distance apart, feet facing forwards.

  • Pelvis in neutral - half way between Elvis and bum poke (see standing posture above).

  • Back and shoulders supported against back of chair.

  • Elbows and forearms resting gently on arm rests.

  • Shoulder blades gently drawn down your back.

  • Hips slightly higher than your knees.

  • Eyes facing and level with what it is looking at.

Now - let's talk about Back Pain relief Products in the context of posture.

At the early stages of posture correction, I use the following devices to assist my patients in the transition to active posture where ultimately the muscles of the body become strong enough to hold the correct posture with ease.

Back friends:
If sitting - especially driving - makes your back pain worse, then this portable device generally helps greatly. The back friend is a foldable seat and support which supports the natural curvature of the spine which in back pain patients is often not correct.

It can be easily transferred from the car to the office to the house, and I find helps resolution and prevention of back pain symptoms greatly. It is designed to support the spine in an ergonomically and anatomically sound position. It provides good feedback and support to your posture and it does not weaken the back muscles, a problem I encounter with other back supports.

Lumbar rolls:
Lumbar rolls are a specifically-shaped cushion for the curve of your lower back. When used in the correct way they enhance correct spinal alignment and facilitate the relief of back pain. They are a small device which can be used in the car, office and at home. I especially find them effective in the management of lower back conditions e.g. herniated discs, facet joint pain, left and lower right back pain.

Neck rolls:
Neck rolls are a thin sausage shaped cushion used behind your neck when lying and help provide the correct alignment of the back curves. Neck rolls are effective in the treatment of right, left and central neck pain. Neck rolls also help middle back pain and back pain between shoulder blades by helping to unload these over-strained areas. Neck rolls enhance good sleeping postures and back pain while sleeping.

Orthopaedic pillows:
The Sissel orthopaedic pillow is my pillow of choice. It is a moderately firm pillow with an inbuilt ridge to support the correct spinal posture while sleeping. Used as part of your management of back pain - these pillows reduce recovery time from back pain and help prevent future episodes of pain effectively.

Remember - we sleep for a third of each 24 hours, and if we are not resting in a stress-free position how can our spines recover from our daily stresses and strains we put them under? Be careful to purchase a quality product.

Taping:
Mechanical Back pain is caused by excess strain being placed on a muscle, joint, ligament, disc or nerve in your spine. I have spent years learning to use adhesive tape to unload these areas while they are healing. It is my primary intervention in mechanical back pain - I find its results are immediate, and the speed of resolution from back pain improves greatly.

For example if you have a L4/5 disc lesion, I unload this area using four strips of tape around this segment. This box-like taping takes the pressure off the disc, immediately relieving pain and facilitating a less stressful environment for the disc to heal. Ask your chartered physiotherapist about this treatment method.
