Manage Back Pain

Memory foam neck Pillow.

The Memory foam neck pillow is becoming very common. I must admit, I have mixed opinions about this type of pain relief product.

The idea behind the memory foam pillow is that the foam will mould around the shape of your head and neck while you sleep. It is a special material that responds to both the shape and heat of your body, resulting in a good neck support.

However, while some clients of my clients report memory foam pillows to be comfortable - they often report minimal change to their neck pain. I have slept on a memory foam pillow - I found it to be comfortable but it did not support my neck in the correct way. This was just one such product, and as with all products there are many varieties out there. I will try some more over time.

Memory Foam Neck Pillow In the meantime, my preference is to use an orthopaedic pillow correctly sized to support your neck curves well. The two main factors to consider in getting results with your orthopaedic pillow are:
  1. The quality of the pillow: This plays a large part in the overall effectiveness of your orthopaedic pillow. Seek professional advice prior to your purchase.

  2. The size of the pillow: Is very important. Whether you have a standard pillow, orthopaedic pillow or memory foam pillow, it is so important that you have it correctly sized to the curves of your neck. Seek professional advice for this to ensure the result you are seeking.

Remember, a memory foam pillow can assist in the recovery of some neck injuries - however you will need the assistance of a chartered physiotherapist to ensure you are choosing the correct pillow for your neck posture. Incorrect pillows can increase the severity of your neck pain. Often I see people using the incorrect pillow for their neck shape - after already spending significant money on a pillow they have to go and spend it all over again.

To summarise, there may be a time and a place for choosing the memory foam pillow against the classic Swedish orthopaedic pillow. However, if you are suffering from neck or back pain - then my advice is to seek a physiotherapistÂ’s advice prior to your purchase.

Remember you spend a lot of your life in bed so you should aim to get the quality of your sleep right. Using correct pillows and mattresses can help this greatly.
