Physiotherapy for Scoliosis

by Benny
(Cork, Ireland)

For years I have been suffering with back ache. It all started when I was 13 and as I now know coincidentally around the time of my first menstral cycle. My mother brought me to see many doctors who diagnosed me with hormonal related back pain.

Two years later my mother brought me to see a school doctor who identified a curve in my lower spine which he termed Scoliosis. His belief was that I would have to live with it, as it was not bad enough to consider surgery but his opinion was that it would never go away. And so the years passed, and although I was not in severe pain, I suffered moderately for approximately three out of every five days. I managed it by not being very active and missed out on a lot of fun as a teenager!

When I was 20 I started limping so I went to the college doctor who referred me to a Chartered Physiotherapist. This was one of the best moments in my life, as she quickly re-assured me that I did have a Scoliosis and that it was the cause of my limp! However she also told me that the cause of my Scoliosis was due to a leg length discrepancy between my two legs! That same day she prescribed an insole for my foot that balanced the length of my legs.

My limp was gone in a week, and after about six sessions of therapy my pain was gone and my scoliosis had disappeared!

I am now 29 and although I attend Phyaiotherapy intermittently for aches and pains I am painfree most of the time and my scoliosis has never re-appeared.
