Pilates During Pregnancy.

Pilates during pregnancy is quite simply a fantastic assistance to you and your baby!

Doing Pilates during your pregnancy helps to enhance your understanding of good posture and how you can unload your tired spine using simple pilates exercises, postures and positions.

However, having the correct technique is very important in pregnancy, so learning from a well trained Pilate’s instructor is of great importance to you. Like any exercise programme performed poorly it can do more harm than good to you (find out more about the difference between Yoga and Pilates).

Using Pilates during your pregnancy also helps you to:
  1. Maintain your fitness safely when pregnant by modifying your exercise regime. Many people come to me at the early to mid stages of their pregnancy asking me how they can continue to keep fit as they and their bump grow bigger in size. The answer is specific to your posture type and exercise history.

However with correct instructions and advice you should be able to keep strong and fit throughout your pregnancy. A chartered physiotherapist with a Pilate’s background is the person of choice to advise and teach you at this time.

  2. Teach you the correct breathing techniques which many of my clients have informed me that it helped them greatly to relax as well as easing their labour. Breathing is a core principle of Pilates and when experienced it will help you to relax and reduce the tension in your body and mind.

  3. Strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. This is a great aspect of Pilates. Prevention of incontinence is an important aspect of managing your pregnancy. It should be a priority as stress-related incontinence post-natally is very common indeed.

  4. Correctly position your baby for delivery through core postural techniques throughout your pregnancy. Maintaining a strong open posture will facilitate your baby to position itself and move around accordingly. This can reduce the risk of breech babies in most instances.

  5. Return your figure quickly after giving birth. Quite simply Pilates performed correctly and frequently enough can have amazing affects on your figure!!!
