Pregnancy and Back Pain:

Relief for Back Pain in Pregnancy.

Back pain during pregnancy is a very common complaint and I see it on a daily basis in my practice. The causes of back pain in pregnancy are varied and many.

However, generally speaking, there are two types of pain relating to your back in pregnancy: Postural pain and Structural back pain.

In this section we will look at specific types of back pain during pregnancy - conditions such as sciatica, lower back pain and upper back pain. We will also look at various treatment approaches (as opposed to just waiting to have your baby!) for each as well as conditioning programmes such as Pilates and Yoga.

Lower back pain during pregnancy.
Lower back pain is the most common area in your back to suffer during your pregnancy. The most common cause of back pain that I see is in your lower back, and is related to the changes in your lower back posture that arise from the physical presence of your bump, and the laxity caused in your pelvis due to the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, often causing bones to move out of place in your pelvis. This can be very painful. Lower back pain can also be a sign of the onset of labour.

Sciatica during Pregnancy.
The most painful back pain experienced in pregnancy is when you have lower back pain and leg pain which is called sciatica. This is where your sciatic nerve is compressed or trapped due to postural changes or displaced joints.

Pregnancy and Upper back pain.
Your upper back can also be affected by pregnancy. This is due to the postural changes, placing increased pressure on the joints, ligaments, discs and nerves of your upper back.

Pilates During Pregnancy.
