Shoulder pain and cycling

by Noreen
(Cork)

Its my shoulder pain that bothers me more than back pain. I am a 69 year old cyclist. In the last few years it has got worse. After an hour to two hours cycling, neck and shoulders pain a lot.

I have tried acupuncture in the past, had immediate relief, but it was short term. My neighbour Sally Ann suggested that I try pilates. Having been previously practised yoga for several years I was sceptical about Pilates because I knew very little about Pilates.

However, I decided to take a beginners course. Now I am in my 3rd month, I must say I have experienced some relief in my shoulders and neck. I hope to continue with another course and some massage therapy to loosen it out.

I look forward to attending every Thursday.

Pilates and shoulder pain

Hi Noreen,

Thank you for you comments! Glad you are enjoying the Pilates course. You are improving greatly.

Pilates is helping you to get out of the sitting posture that your back is holding itself in. With time and effort your tightened muscles will lengthen and the muscles that are weak in your back and neck will get stronger. With the posture awareness that Pilates is giving you, you are already sitting better on your bike!

Keep at it! It takes time!

Sally Ann.
