Stress Fracture From Cricket

by Rob Hampson
(Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa)

For years I had a bad back problem due to a minor stress fracture in my lower back that was caused from bowling with a bad action.

It took quite a while to recover and quite a few different methods to get it better! And yes I was in pain for a very long time.

The first step was obviously rest... No bowling! I didn't stop playing cricket (fortunately I'm an all-rounder and could still bat), but I did stop bowling for ages.

Finally the stress fracture healed but all my muscles were still in knots and spasms.

There were three things that finally healed all of my pains and knots...

1. Stretching properly everyday and before and after exercising. I focused obviously on stretching my lower back but also on my hamstrings. Apparently tight hamstrings can have a major negative effect on your lower back. After stretching my hami's I always felt incredibly better!

2. By doing good core exercises to strengthen my back muscles and obviously my core. Having a strong core helps so much with the recovery of your back!

3. And lastly by visiting the best chiropractor that I have ever been to every once in a while. I always had the most amazing results after visiting Nicole, my chiropractor in Pietermaritzburg. She has a way of gently manipulated your back in a way that always makes you feel better and that lengthens that amount of time you can wait until the next time you have to see... Obviously not very good for business but very good for my back.

So with the combination of rest, stretching, exercise and a good chiropractor I have now managed to be rid of my very irritating back problems!

Well Done!!
by: Sally Ann Quirke

Stress fractures are very common causes of back pain. When treating back pain I always prioritise removing the cause of the pain where possible.

Once your stress fracture had healed the primary cause of your pain was removed. That was a very important step in the direction of recovery!

After that appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises are always my treatment of choice.

However, I stress the word 'appropriate', as doing the correct exercises for each individuals back pain will help resolve pain, whereas incorrect exercises could potentially make things worse. But you did the right thing and took the advice of a good professional! Well done you! Hope it continues to be managed well.
